Dear Burma: Have I got a deal for you.

Uh oh ... someone's looking for a handout:

Burma asks for aid as cyclone death toll tops 10,000

Burma's reclusive junta made a rare plea for foreign aid on Monday as the death toll from the weekend's devastating tropical cyclone climbed past 10,000.

Here's a suggestion, Burma: You release Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and escort her to the airport. And after she touches down safely in the foreign country of her choice, we'll talk.

Does that work for you?

Sounds like a fair deal to me - you'd think someone would mention that on the...I don't know...national stage? Seeing as she's an honorary Canadian citizen and all.

Even better CC, escort Aung San Suu Kyi to the Presidential Palace and have the Junta board planes for the foreign country of their choice, and we double it.

While I applaud the sentiment, you're assuming her first priority would be to leave Burma. She was offered the chance to leave to see her dying husband in 1999 and refused because she knew she wouldn't be allowed back. I suspect she'd be no more likely to abandon the country now than she was then.

Laura Bush says that the Burmese government should have been better prepared for the storm. Bwahahahahah.

What it is.

Laura Bush probably said that because in her country, they've never had to deal with the disastrous consequences of a category 3 (or greater) storm making a direct hit on a low-lying expansive delta area that's heavily populated.

I don't claim to know who you're talking about ( I assume she's a political prisoner of some sort ) however if a small nation just got their ass handed to them by nature I don't think we should be quibbling. I think we should be helping them. We can sort that other shit out later.

I'm not sure the time to discuss stuff like that is when 40,000 people are dead ( by the last estimate I heard ) and over a million are homeless. It's not the fault of the regular citizens of that country that someone is (wrongly)imprisoned.

Lets just hope they don't send in Haliburton to help them out. They'll be worse off than before.

i think we may be taking psa's suggest at more face value than he had intended. invoking the plight of aung san suu kyi underscores the nature of the junta that rules that nation, which, despite their pleas for international aid, have given, as of yet, no indication that are actually willing to accept that aid.

I know. I'm sorry. Six things. You won't believe it when I actually get to it. Blogging is so time consuming.

But I digress. No, wait. I don't.

Um, how I hate Patrick Ross!
