That's my guess. When that song was popular, I seem to remember very few people understood what it was really about. Kind of like Air Supply's Afternoon Delight.

Yep. All that mattered was that the song made some reference to Hay-zus and another reference to Mary. Must have been one of them 'new' spirituals.
